MELBOURNE: A taste of luxury at Secondo

Posted by: Laura    Tags:  FASHION, MELBOURNE, Secondo, shopping, Vintage    Posted date:  July 24, 2012  |  No comment

Step into Secondo and you will enter another world: a world where you can find some of the most unique and beautiful luxury items imaginable.

And what’s more, where you can actually afford them. Secondo is a very stylish consignment boutique, that specialises in a variety of international and local brands.

But what is a consignment store and how does it work? Consignment means ‘an agreement to pay a supplier of goods after the goods are sold’, according to my iMac dictionary. In English, this means the original owner of an item can sell it through an outlet like Secondo, and Secondo will receive 50 per cent of the sale price.

Generally, a client will bring in items for an initial assessment and is given a temporary receipt for anything Secondo may decide to sell. It will then go on display in-store, and hopefully sell!

You can find labels here that range from Scanlan & Theodore to Chanel or Gucci. The clothing and accessories all have one thing in common though: they are in pristine condition.

Everything is examined very carefully before it can be sold at Secondo. Most of the items you see in the store appear to be almost new. There is a real feeling of warmth in the store – everyone who works there is passionate about what they do, and it reflects in the beautiful displays and fabulous customer service.

On a lucky day, you can occasionally spot famous people in there. Apparently, one day Nicholas Cage wandered in because his girlfriend took a fancy to something in the window. Another customer in the store got so excited she actually ran home to get a camera!

And guess who wore an Issey Miyake outfit (from Secondo) onstage in a live Prince concert at Rod Laver? None other than Shelby J.

But this boutique store will make you feel at home whether you are famous or not. There is such a fabulous range of designers available, and the pricing varies enough to allow anyone to shop there (forget the snooty sales assistants at Chanel – at Secondo you’ll be greeted with a big smile and genuinely helpful assistance).

So, feel like luxuriating in a cashmere cardie or picking up a pair of Louboutins? This is definitely the best place to find them in Melbourne!

A big thanks to Elisabet at Secondo for letting me visit the store to take photos, and to the team for answering all of my questions.
