MELBOURNE: Barkins relaunch

Oh Barkins, it’s so good to have you back.  I really did miss you.

I’ll be honest, as you can only be with an old friend, you used to be just a little bit daggy. But I loved you anyway because hey, a bargin is a bargin and there were usually some gems among all the mumsy wrap dresses and slacks.

If I can have a Blair Waldorff moment (admittedly she wouldn’t be caught dead in high street fashion, but that’s her loss), I’d liken your return to the second half of Sabrina: Audrey Hepburn comes back from Paris, all grown (read: glammed) up and finally the man of her dreams takes notice.

All the basics are still there, but the collection as a whole is that little bit chicer, with bolder prints and more sophisticated cuts.

There is much of what you would expect of a high street shop: the inevitable Kate Middleton knock offs and collections named after trend setting celebs (Beckham, Miller and Olsen), but it works.

The price point is perfect for the fast fashion fix with key pieces sitting at the $30-$50 mark and  I just had to break my self-imposed shopping ban at the QV store launch (will figure out a loophole later), picking up the Contract Lace Skirt and Cecelia Sweater.

In this same theme I’m also a little tempted by the Swing Coat…

Based on this I’m sure my mother would day you’re a bad influence, but I think the cheap and cheeky thrill makes me love you even more.

No wonder Barkins is so well-loved! And that’s a very pretty lace skirt!
